Dear Students, 

We will keep our community informed as the situation evolves. If you know of anyone who does not receive our newsletter, please inform them of this news and we also advise that our notifications will be shared not only via email but also through our website and social media. So don’t forget to check them for up-to-date notifications.


NYSA requires proof of vaccination against COVID-19.

COVID-19 Vaccine proof must be sent to info@newyorkschoolofthearts.org. Email header should read “COVID Vaccination proof.” You may include a photo of a vaccine card, the QR code, or information displayed from a state or city-run app (such as New York State’s Excelsior Pass.)


As of Spring 2022

Capacity 

NYSA will begin Fall Session 1 on September 14th utilizing a hybrid method and density reducing measures across the building. 
•Maurizio Pellegrin’s Lecture Series will be held online throughout the fall semester. 
• Enrollment for all Workshops with in-person instruction will be reduced to six to eight students to allow for proper social distancing and reduced density. 
• The bulk of classes will be held online to reduce population density in the building.


Physical Distancing in the Building 

• The number of classes per day during the fall session Workshops has been staggered and spread over four time sessions (morning, afternoon, late afternoon, and evening) Monday through Friday to reduce congregation. 
• A distance of six feet must be maintained at all times when moving through the building. 
• Elevator use is limited to two people per trip. Signs are located on the floor of the elevator to indicate safe distancing while inside it.
• Restrooms are restricted to one person at a time. 
• In person classes have been arranged to maintain a minimum of 6 feet between students, when practicable. 
• Unless this is not practicable, everyone should keep a distance of at least 6 feet from each other. Those in violation of this rule will be required to leave the building and may not be permitted reentry. If an employee or student is infected, we will follow the protocol outlined below


Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) 

• Face coverings must always be worn over the nose and mouth in the building with the sole exception of private studio spaces, but if someone comes within six feet of a student’s studio, the face coverings must be put on immediately if the studio is not closed. 
• Gloves will be available at no cost and located at School office, by the sinks and classroom studio areas. 
• NYSA encourages everyone to bring their own gloves and masks. NYSA will not provide masks.


Hygiene, Cleaning and Disinfection 

• Sanitizing stations and disinfecting spray are located throughout the building and should be used in accordance with the instructions in these guidelines. 
• Hands should be sanitized and/or washed upon entry to the building and workspaces. 
• All high touch and traffic areas are disinfected and cleaned daily 
• Touch-free faucets have been installed in the restrooms. 
• Sanitizer dispensers are available in restrooms, communal sink areas, and outside classroom studios. 
• Ventilation system will operate continuously during operating hours to circulate fresh air. 
• Classrooms have been equipped with sanitizing spray for student access to clean their equipment. 
• Janitorial staff will clean and disinfect high-touch areas throughout the building including restrooms, hallways, elevator, stairways, sink areas, offices, and studio classroom areas. 


Arts Intensive Studios 

• Students enrolled in the Arts Intensive program will be assigned a studio for single use while enrolled during the COVID-19 Pandemic, beginning in September. 
• Arts Intensive Studios are for individual students; no shared spaces are allowed. No visitors. 
• Students are responsible for cleaning and disinfecting their work area (other than the floor) when they leave each day. Cleaning and disinfecting supplies will be available at the group sink area near the restrooms

 

HUB Labs

• Access to these studios is subject to change. Current access hours:
Monday – Thursday, 8am – 8pm; Friday, 8am – 4pm. Weekend access available with use of your Lab code.
• Students are responsible for cleaning and disinfecting their private area when they leave each day. Cleaning and disinfecting supplies will be available at the group sink area near the restrooms.

Printmaking Studio

• To maintain social distancing only one person at a time will be allowed to use the printmaking press. No more than seven people will be allowed into the printmaking room at any given time. 
• When their scheduled class time is completed, students must wipe down their area and all tools with the provided disinfectant spray. Additionally, this area will be cleaned and disinfected by staff during off hours. • When cleaning their tools in the common sink areas, students must abide by social distancing guidelines to avoid overcrowding.

 

Group Sinks

• Use of group sinks shall be staggered so that anyone using a sink must be 6 feet away from others. This will be the responsibility of the faculty as part of classroom management.

Classrooms 

• When the scheduled class time is completed, students must wipe down their area and all tools, easel, and tables with the provided disinfectant spray. Additionally, this area will be cleaned and disinfected by staff during off hours. 

 

Models 

• Students working with a model during the six-week limited access period will be restricted to five to eight people per room. Easels and workspaces have been placed on the floor to maintain a safe distance between students. Students must always stay within their space. 
• During the fall semester, classes requiring the use of live models will be restricted to five to eight students. 
• When the scheduled time is completed, students must wipe down their area and all tools, easel, and tables with the provided disinfectant spray. Additionally, this area will be cleaned and disinfected by staff during off hours. 

School Offices and Schedules 

• Staffing hours will be reduced and scheduled during the six-week summer limited phased access and throughout the academic year. 
• Staff are required to sanitize their desk area with provided spray sanitizer. Additionally, this area will be cleaned and disinfected by staff during off hours.

Locker Access

As part of our reopening efforts, starting on July 6th, students will be able to access locker areas to remove their supplies. To ensure everyone's safety, access is by appointment only

Summer Workshops

Join one of our on-site workshops starting the week of July 20th. All classes have been programmed with your safety in mind. Registration is now open!

New Safety measures are in place to ensure our facilities are safe for our artist community:

- Hand Sanitizers and disinfectants available in key areas of the school

- Social distancing signs to help participants maintain proper protocol 

- Limited seating for all classes to promote a safe environment

- Limited class programming each day to avoid overcrowding in school facilities As of Friday, March 14, 2020:

In order to best protect the health of our Community, New York School of the Arts is suspending all classes and workshops through March 31. 


There are no known cases of COVID-19 in our school; nor do we know of any threatening exposures to the virus. The suspension of classes and workshops is simply a precautionary one.

  • No Classes

    • As of March 31, Painting and Drawing courses are offered ONLINE. Register Now

  • No Workshops

  • There is no Arts Intensive Access with the exceptions detailed in the section below, "Building Access"

  • The exhibition will be mounted and on view as “virtual tour” through our website newyorkschoolofthearts.org

  • No Public Access after 4:00PM this Friday, March 13

  • Main Office Available by Telephone (646-880-9050) Only During the Hours Listed Below.


Building Access 

School Access will be limited only for students and HUB members who wish to pick up materials from their studio or locker. After that, there will be no public access to the building until classes resume. The hours for pick up are:

  • Sunday, 3/15 4:00pm to 8:00 pm

  • Monday, 3/16 10:00am to 4:00pm

  • Tuesday, 3/17 10:00am to 4:00pm


Artwork in the Current Exhibition

Students participating in the current Open House Exhibition may drop off their work during the times listed above.

Rescheduling 

A separate notification will be shared via email, social media and our website next week regarding rescheduling decisions.

Your Health

  • You have been diagnosed with COVID-19,

  • You have had contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19; or

  • You, or someone with whom you’ve had close contact, has recently traveled to a country that the Centers for Disease Control has identified as having a risk of Level 2 or higher (China, Iran, Italy, South Korea or Japan).

If you meet these criteria, or if you feel ill or develop any symptoms consistent with coronavirus such as fever, cough, or shortness of breath, please follow the recommendations of the CDC. Click here to read the CDC's recommendations.

We at the School Office and Board of Directors feel that in the current conditions, suspending classes is the right decision for all us in the community. Your health and safety are first and foremost to us, even if we regret suspending operations.
