This class will look at and analyze how to go from the real world of observation into abstraction using some simple exercises.

Starting with basic drawing and working into painting ( acrylics preferred) we will also explore materials and their unique possibilities to add to the project.

Taking into account color and composition we will work to produce original works while maintaining a solid conceptual basis for the work.

Painting the Model in Costume: A Focus on Portrait

In this immersive course, students will explore the art of portrait painting through the expressive lens of costumed figure work. I will begin with an overview of my approach to painting the portrait—emphasizing a broad-to-specific method of structuring the head and working from large shapes to smaller, refined details.

Throughout the course, we will explore classic construction techniques, including the Loomis method and the use of angles to enhance accuracy and proportion. As we work from live models dressed in richly detailed period or thematic costume, students will deepen their understanding of facial structure, anatomy, and the storytelling power of costume and pose.
Special attention will be given to painting facial features and capturing the subtle interplay of light and shadow across skin and fabric. Through demonstration and individual guidance, students will develop their technical skills while discovering new ways to convey spirit, atmosphere, and character in their portraits.

Whether you're looking to elevate your portraiture or breathe new life into your figurative work, this course offers a unique and inspiring approach to creating portraits.

All levels are welcome.

Painting: The Essential Elements

Explore your potential as you handle the material of oil paint. Learn to stretch canvases, prepare surfaces, and clean brushes correctly. Become acquainted with the language of painting through different approaches to working from life. Historical examples will be presented. It is often said that painting is drawing with color. But this is not the same thing as drawing and color. Color will be presented as a way of drawing, of putting together a visual statement in paint.
