Pen & Ink Drawing Intensive: Hatching and Cross-Hatching Techniques and Expression

This workshop explores Pen and Ink drawings, using the fundamental techniques of hatching and cross-hatching, and understanding how to create light, shade, texture, and forms with calligraphy pens. Through demonstrations, guided exercises, and observational drawing, Participants will:
- Learn basic drawing techniques with both pencils and ink.
- Understand tonal values and how to express light, shade, and shadow in ink drawings.
- Learn how to control calligraphy pens and make varied lines and textures.
- Explore different types of ink and drawing tools, experimenting with characteristic outcomes.
- Enjoy exploring pen-and-ink drawing methods from start to finish.

Workshop Schedule and target:
- Monday, August 10th - All levels are welcome
- Wednesday, August 19th - All levels are welcome Saturday
- Saturday, August 22nd - *Intermediate workshop focusing on forms and detailed work in ink.

*This workshop will provide some ink and some simple reference images to draw from, such as botanical, figurative, and still-life images. Also, some still-life objects may be available in class.

Exploring Pastels

n this class students will learn to use pastels and explore this versatile and exciting medium. General formal artistic qualities such as composition, color theory and tonal values will be addressed, as well properties specific to pastel such as blending, layering, mark making and texture. We will have a model to work from every other week, and on non- model class days students will investigate subjects and themes such as still-life, landscape, portraiture and abstraction while learning the fundamentals of working with pastels. All levels of experience are welcome.

Drawing the Nude

Working from a live model, students will create images based on observation, intuition and artistic vision. Anatomy, structure and use of materials will be discussed to help and guide students through the process of creating their own work.

Understanding the basics of drawing the figure allows you to organize light, shade, gesture, and rhythm into a single expressive whole.
Working individually with the instructor, you’ll be introduced to varied drawing approaches and techniques, and develop your skills and insights.

Anatomy, Composition & Perspective: Figure Drawing for Painters

This comprehensive figure drawing course is designed for artists seeking to deepen their understanding of the human form and harness drawing as a tool for planning compelling compositions. Combining classical and contemporary approaches, the course weaves together core disciplines—figure drawing, anatomy, composition, and perspective—to build a robust visual language grounded in observation and intention.

Students will explore the structural logic of the body through anatomy studies, learn to capture dynamic poses with confidence, and apply principles of perspective to place figures believably in space. Emphasis will be placed on compositional strategy, teaching artists to move beyond isolated figure studies and toward narrative and spatial planning for finished works.

Through live model sessions, masterwork analysis, and progressive drawing exercises, students will learn to:
• Understand the anatomical landmarks essential to expressive, accurate figure drawing
• Use gesture and structure to convey weight, movement, and emotion
• Construct spatially sound compositions using linear and atmospheric perspective
• Design value groupings and focal points to support narrative and mood
• Translate thumbnail sketches into preliminary studies for paintings or sustained drawings

This course is ideal for artists at any level, who want to integrate figure drawing more intentionally into their painting practice.

Life Drawing

We will be drawing together from the Model and bringing to light the issues that arise in each session. The objective is to consider our options as to how we can deal with the issues that arise and to work with these ideas through our drawing and into our painting in the afternoon class (Abstraction: Development of Language and Imagery.)
