Abstraction: Development of Language & Imagery

We will explore the issues central to abstract painting and the function of drawing in developing one’s own language. This class focuses on developing each artist’s passion for making abstract art through a range of activities, studying in particular how to explore one’s inspiration and ideas via the process and using a language specific to each artist to develop these ideas into coherent images. Artists are encouraged to work from the source material that is personal to them and to engage in a dialogue with contemporary exhibiting artists whose work is relevant to their own.

It is anticipated that each artist will develop a deeper understanding of their own inclinations and their role in creating their artwork with the ultimate goal of developing a coherent body of work.

From Figures to Abstraction – Advanced Course

Building on the basic skills and strategies learned in the introductory course (on Tuesday mornings ) this class, while still focused on Painting, will encourage all students to begin to truly develop and sustain their own work.

We will push your work technically and conceptually. Working in a larger studio will allow students to work on projects for several weeks at a time, and also to create work on larger scale. We will also explore mediums in more depth so has to have a wider range of paints and tools at our disposal.

This will be a more individually tailored course where the instructor will help you to kickstart, maintain and sustain your work to allow you to delve deeper into your own practice..(Acrylics preferred)

Figure Painting: Tools & Techniques

This course will progress from the observation and analysis of painting the live model to the integration of imagination and personal expression into your work. We will analyze and discuss the reappropriation of classical techniques by contemporary masters, and explore the introduction of new techniques to the genre of oil painting. Experimentation in method is married with a focus on developing a solid framework of research, planning, and execution. Class discussions, lectures, demonstrations, and individual feedback guide students through the mastery of foundational techniques to the incorporation of the more inventive, introducing splatter, masking, scraping, stamping, texture, and transfers to contemporary figure painting.

Painting the Contemporary Landscape

Landscape painting has a deep and rich history. This class will help students probe the question of how to paint a landscape that reflects the contemporary world in which we live. Composition will be explored through value studies and sketches, and students will be guided in choosing a subject that resonates with them. Color, mark making, and the layering of both paint and space will be discussed, as will linear and atmospheric perspective as needed. Students can investigate the spectrum of highly representational landscapes to complete abstraction and everything in between.

Any media and level of experience is welcome.
