Introduction to Sculpture

The fundamental issues in sculpture, such as material, process, context, form, scale, structure, and space will be introduced; combined with the elements and principles of design within the context of sculpture. A significant component will be the variety of materials that might be used - clay, wood, metal, and plaster, as well as the review of supplemental materials, including images, videos, and readings.

Advanced Sculpture Projects

This class is designed for advanced students who completed the Introduction to Sculpture class and those artists who already have sculpture experience
The class will guide experienced students eager to undertake ambitious sculptural endeavors by engaging in critical analysis and group discussions about their projects.

Foundations of Sculpture

Working from a live model, students will create an image based on observation, intuition and artistic vision. Anatomy and structure will be discussed to help guide students through the process of creating their own artwork. Any material and any level are welcome. Water clay will be provided.

Re-thinking the Ordinary: Metal

Unlock your creativity and explore the transformative potential of everyday metal objects in our mixed media workshop, Re-thinking the Ordinary: Metal. This immersive, hands-on class encourages artists of all levels to breathe new life into common metal items, turning them into unique, expressive sculptures. You’ll learn techniques for manipulating and reshaping metal, along with methods to seamlessly integrate it with materials like wood, textiles, and found objects. Our expert instructors will guide you in creatively conceptualizing and designing your pieces while sharing essential practices for working safely with metal and mixed media.

Materials: Please remember to bring the materials you'll need for your project, as well as gloves for safety. Tools will be provided.

Clay & the Biomorphic form: Objects inspired by Nature

A foundational ceramics class where you will create a menagerie of surreal or biomorphic sculptures. You will learn the process, design and the basics of hand-building in either red or white clay, with one-on-one help from your instructor. The course will touch on several ceramic techniques, terminologies, histories, and the core science and chemistry relevant to its process. You will also get updates on ceramic shows in the contemporary art world. Feel free to bring a sketch of what you would like to make on the first day of class.

All levels welcome.

Stone Carving

This class will introduce students to the history of stone carving and its use in contemporary sculpture. The techniques used to shape the stone will be examined, the practical aspects of using and sharpening the tools, selecting the size, volume and type of stone to carve, as well as finishing of the surface of the artwork. Students will have a completed project at the conclusion of the workshop. Students must bring soap stone to work on.
